NON SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Face
FACE

Facial rejuvenation has reached a new era. Rather than the skin-pulling procedures that were so popular ten years ago, treatment of the aging face now focuses on restoring youthful contour in a way individualized for each patient. For some, this may mean a facelift. For others, however, this may mean injections that restore youthful contour, or operations done with a tiny camera and tiny incisions.

Facelift

Over time, the skin of the neck and face may appear to sag. This is usually due to drooping of the SMAS - the superficial musculoaponeurotic system. Rather than the skin-pulling procedures that were so popular ten years ago, treatment of the aging face now focuses on resuspension of the SMAS to eliminate the droop. During the procedure, the SMAS is hitched to deep, immobile structures, which then pull back the excess tissue. The extra skin is then removed behind the ears, at the hairline, and at the natural crease between the earlobe and face. Excess fat of the neck is removed at the same time. Recovery is about 2 weeks.

Fat Transfers

Much like dermal fillers, fat transfers are used to correct volume loss and deep wrinkles in the face. Clients can achieve incredible, youthful plumpness in the lips, cheeks and lower eyelids (one area that is limited for other fillers) using this safe and highly effective treatment.

Many clients choose fat transfers over dermal fillers because fat transfers do not require sourcing materials from outside the body. Dr. Overstreet will typically harvest fat from the abdomen and carefully re-inject it into the face. This treatment is also helpful in resurfacing the skin to improve texture and tone and is routinely used with face and neck lifts or other facial procedures. Fat transfers can last from 6 months to many years, and subsequent treatments can last even longer.

EYELID LIFT

Do you have...

  • Hooded, hanging upper eyelids

  • Excess skin that obscures the natural fold of your upper eyelids and hides your makeup

  • Puffy lower eyelids

  • Dark circles (bags) under your eyes

An eyelid lift, known to plastic surgeons as "blepharoplasty", removes excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. The surgery is tailored to the needs of each patient, whether the problem is a little extra upper eyelid skin, or serious "baggage" on the lower lids.

This safe and effective procedure gives your eyes a rested and more alert appearance, making you look years younger. Although it affects only a tiny area of the face, the results of even a subtle blepharoplasty are incredibly revitalizing.

RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty (popularly known as a "nose job") reshapes your nose and can dramatically improve your appearance. Changes can be made to the bridge of your nose, reducing a full nose or shaving down a hump. If you have a very low bridge, it can be augmented to create a more refined nose. The tip of your nose can be made narrower, smaller, or more defined. Dr. Overstreet offers exceptional rhinoplasty techniques, including the use of a "closed" incision, which eliminates any external scars.

Rhinoplasty can:

  • Fill in a "scooped" bridge of the nose

  • Smooth down a hump to achieve a straighter nose

  • Reshape the tip of the nose

  • Reduce or add to the overall size of the nose

  • Improve the angle between the nose and upper lip

  • Repair defects following an injury

  • Correct a birth defect

  • Improve breathing difficulties, including those caused by a deviated septum (this procedure is called "septoplasty")

REVISION RHINOPLASTY

Dr. Overstreet uses a number of procedures to correct deformities caused by previous rhinoplasty or trauma.

Common types of revision rhinoplasty and their solutions include:

  • Breathing problems due to nasal collapse - A lack of cartilage support may make breathing through your nose difficult. Dr. Overstreet can use small cartilage grafts called "spreader grafts" to help strengthen and open your inner nasal passages (the "roof" of your nose) for easy breathing.

  • Overresected dorsum - A cute, "ski-slope" nose used to be a popular rhinoplasty choice, but many now consider this type of nose to be "over done." Dr. Overstreet can add cartilage or filler to the nose to create a more proportioned and natural look.

  • Hanging columella - Many noses have a hanging columella - the cartilage between the nostrils. Dr. Overstreet can determine the source of the issue (septal cartilage that pushes down or excess skin in the area), and take appropriate steps to correct it.

  • Altar retraction - If the cartilage on the sides of the nose has been overly trimmed, it may make the inside of the nose more visible. Dr. Overstreet can correct this with tiny grafts and give you a more natural-looking nose.

OTOPLASTY - EAR PINNING

For some people, their ears are a big issue. Maybe you feel that your ears stick out too far or your earlobes are too big. Perhaps your upper and lower ears are disproportionate or you’ve always worn your hair a certain way to hide what you feel are embarrassingly large ears. With ear pinback surgery, there is a simple and elegant solution.

Dr. Overstreet performs otoplasty to correct prominent ears.  He reshapes and repositions the ears to produce a more desirable aesthetic appearance.

This procedure is relatively simple and involves remolding and repositioning the cartilage in the ear to create a subtler, more balanced look. As a result, children who had been teased can grow up without further worry and adults who have been self-conscious for years can step out confidently and freely explore new hair and jewelry styles.

EAR LOBE - EAR GAUGE REPAIR

Ear lobe repair is a reconstructive plastic surgery procedure performed to restore the appearance of earlobes that have been torn or stretched due to ear tearing, trauma or piercing, including the insertion of ear gauges. Ear lobe repair surgery can be a quick fix for the long term effects of ear gauging. If your ear lobes are split, enlarged or you are insecure about your ear lobe shape, you are a candidate for Ear Lobe Repair.

SCAR REVISION

Scars and wound healing are unpredictable. The way a scar develops depends on many factors including how your body heals, the severity of the original injury, and the surgeon's skills who initially treated the wound. Many scars that appear large and unattractive at first may become less noticeable with time. Some can be treated with steroid injections to relieve symptoms such as tenderness and itching. For these reasons, it is recommended to wait as long as a year after an injury or surgery before you decide to have scar revision.

Whether the appearance of a scar bothers you is a highly personal matter. While no scar can be removed completely, a skilled Plastic Surgeon can often improve the appearance of a scar, making it less obvious. Dr. Overstreet may initially suggest less invasive treatments to minimize the appearance of your scar. These minimally invasive treatments can include laser resurfacing, pressure treatments, or steroid injections. If after your examination, he determines that your scar will require scar revision surgery, he will discuss this in depth with you. For many scars, scar revision can be preformed in the office with local anesthesia alone; however, depending on their location and size, some scars will require scar revision surgery at the hospital as an outpatient procedure.

BODY CONTOURING

For patient convenience, various areas of the body can be treated simultaneously during surgery. The body contouring procedures Dr. Overstreet performs in Hendersonville are:

  • Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

  • Abdominal Skin Tightening

  • Arm Tightening (Brachioplasty)

  • Breast Augmentation

  • Breast Lift

Generally, body contouring includes lifts and body adjustments. Patients have the option of selecting one or more procedures, depending on their problem areas.

LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction can be beneficial for people with specific problem areas. It targets fat deposits in areas that exercise won’t eliminate. There is one important note though: this procedure is not designed for people who are massively overweight and is not meant for weight loss.

Liposuction is a surgery that offers an instant, visible improvement, and it is often combined with other body contouring procedures. It requires a skillful hand and eye, because overdoing it can create unsightly indentations. That’s why it’s no wonder so many people visit Blue Ridge Plastic Surgery for the ultimate in safe, beautiful results.

ABDOMINOPLAStY - TUMMY TUCK

There are very few women who do not have changes in their abdominal wall after child bearing. Most tell us that they have been self conscious about their stomachs for a long time. Some have loose sagging abdominal skin. Others have abdomens that protrude because their abdominal muscles have been stretched by pregnancy. Some have lost weight and have excess tissue that won’t go away on it’s own. Almost all have tried dieting and exercising and are discouraged by the lack of results. In fact, patients find that as they lose weight the skin becomes looser and looks even worse!

Liposuction alone can’t fix that, nor does it repair the abdominal muscles or remove the excess skin. So, if you want to get your pre-pregnancy tummy back, there is no substitute for a Lipoabdominoplasty.

A tummy tuck corrects three main areas of concern:

  • On mini tummy tucks, liposuction of the entire abdominal wall is used to reduce the fat thickness throughout.

  • Then the rectus abdominis muscles, or the sit-up muscles, are repaired.  Usually with pregnancies these are stretched apart in the middle and no amount of crunches will work!

  • Finally, the excess skin is removed resulting in a contoured flat tummy.

Plastic surgeon, Dr. Leonard Overstreet, is highly experienced and skilled in performing body contouring procedures.  During your consultation, he will evaluate you and discuss your goals in detail to determine what surgical procedure(s) will be most beneficial for you. Dr. Overstreet will determine whether you will be best served with a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. You may also benefit from the addition of liposuction of other areas to complement the tummy tuck procedure and produce more desirable results.

HAND SURGERY

If your hand is impaired in any way, surgery may improve your condition. This type of very specialized surgery can treat diseases that cause pain and impair the strength, function and flexibility of your wrist and fingers. Surgery seeks to restore to near normal the function of fingers and hands injured by trauma or to correct abnormalities that were present at birth. Specifically, hand surgery can treat:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – a condition caused by pressure to the median nerve within the wrist, or carpal tunnel. You might feel pain, a tingling sensation, numbness of the fingers, weakness or aching. Carpal tunnel syndrome is associated with multiple conditions including: repetitive motion or overuse, fluid retention during pregnancy, injury to the nerve in the carpal tunnel or rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Dupuytren’s contracture – a disabling hand disorder in which thick, scar-like tissue bands form within the palm and may extend into the fingers. It can cause restricted movement, bending the fingers into an abnormal position.

Dr Overstreet, of Blue Ridge Plastic Surgery, is a hand surgery specialist.

SPIDER VEINS

Spider veins (also called telangiectasia or venulectasias) are enlarged veins near the skin surface that resemble tiny webs of red, blue or purple lines. They can appear anywhere, but are most often found on the legs.

Many people have a few, barely visible spider veins, but when they accumulate, they can become noticeable and distracting from your appearance. Although they are rarely a medical issue, many people choose to eliminate spider veins so that their skin looks smooth and even. With among the best spider vein treatment Western North Carolina offers, our experts can easily and instantly banish spider veins, giving you gorgeous, evenly-toned skin.

Spider veins occur more often in women than in men. They become more prevalent with age and affect from 30 to 50 percent of adults. Whatever your age, let Dr. Overstreet show you the ultra-effective spider vein treatments available at Blue Ridge Plastic Surgery.

BREAST

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast augmentations, or mammoplasties, can be performed for a number of reasons. For some women, their breasts never really develop, which can cause self-esteem issues and difficulty buying or filling out clothes. For others, the breasts may droop after childbirth or following massive weight loss or gain. There is also a subset of patients who look to breast augmentation as a method of breast reconstruction after cancer treatment.

In reality, women’s breasts are a very emotional issue. Since breasts are sexual organs, a smaller chest size can cause a severe loss of confidence and a feeling of diminished feminity. The good news is that breast augmentation isn’t just helpful in adding volume, but it can also provide greater firmness and put the body in better proportion. What’s more, breast implants can be easily combined with a breast lift to create cleavage, fullness and a more youthful figure overall.

The type of implant and size is dependent on your skin, muscle tone and chest wall, and Dr. Overstreet takes a highly individualized approach to every surgery. He takes time to discuss how it will affect your total appearance and what the results will look like in the future. After all, breast implants are not for life. They do break down after time and most women will need at least one replacement after 10 years or so.

BREAST LIFT

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is used to treat ptotic breasts. This condition is characterized by breasts that have lost their tone and have begun to droop. Most commonly occurring after pregnancy and nursing, ptotic breasts can also be the result of extreme weight gain or loss due to dieting, illness or bariatric surgery.

When a woman’s breasts are hanging low, sometimes a breast lift alone is an effective solution. That said, this procedure is only effective in raising the breasts up—it will not create or replace lost tone. So in many cases, it is helpful to also insert a small implant to provide more firmness and cleavage.

Dr. Overstreet is committed to helping every patient achieve their desired results, so he does his due diligence to discuss all of your options in detail. Dr. Overstreet is careful to help patients select the right size implant as to not cause issues with nipple vascularity (blood supply) or other potential complications. And thanks to his exceptional experience and gentle approach, he can usually complete a breast lift and implant combination procedure in a single stage.

BREAST REDUCTION

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a safe and effective option for women with large, heavy breasts. Women with large breasts may not only be dissatisfied with their body image, but also experience physical pain and discomfort, including back or shoulder pain in addition to suffering from skin irritation, bra strap indentations, concerns with posture, and limitations with physical exercise.

Breast reduction surgery involves removal of excess skin, fat and glandular tissue through incisions on your breasts. Excess fat may also be removed through liposuction along with various excision techniques. If your breast size is due primarily to fatty tissue and excess skin is not an issue, liposuction alone may be used as the key technique for breast reduction.

A consultation with Dr. Overstreet, at Blue Ridge Plastic Surgery, is the first step to learn if you are a candidate for the procedure. Dr. Overstreet will explain how a reduction mammoplasty can improve the appearance of your breasts and relieve pain, discomfort and any associated symptoms you may be experiencing.

MALE BREAST REDUCTION

A male breast reduction is the most effective known treatment for gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. This cosmetic surgery procedure removes excess fat and glandular tissue to restore a flatter, firmer and more masculine contour to the chest.

Due to genetics, use of certain medications, or other unspecified reasons, some men develop the appearance of enlarged breasts. It is estimated that up to 50% of men in the United States experience some degree of gynecomastia during their lifetime. Gynecomastia can present at any age, and male breast reduction can be performed safely and successfully on teenagers and adult men alike.

If you are uncomfortable or self-conscious about the appearance of your chest, or if you find yourself avoiding certain activities because you are afraid to show your chest, male breast reduction is an option to consider. Dr. Overstreet will help you decide the best procedure

according to your personal needs.

BREAST RECONStRUCTION

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure commonly performed after a mastectomy to offer patients psychological and aesthetic benefits when recovering from breast cancer. This procedure allows many women to fully return to the life they enjoyed before being diagnosed with breast cancer, with barely any signs of the disease remaining.

A mastectomy, or surgical removal of one or both breasts to rid the body of cancerous growths, can be an emotionally devastating experience. While this treatment has helped millions of women overcome cancer, some mastectomy patients find that their drastically altered new figures are a constant and unwanted reminder of a dark and incredibly taxing period of their lives. Breast reconstruction surgery can help restore a woman's bust, as well as her confidence and self-esteem, after a mastectomy. Dr. Overstreet has helped many women achieve the bust lines they desire.
